Montenegro has suspended abridgements for foreign workers

On May 14, 2015 the Government of Montenegro has decided to postpone till autumn the implementation of the new Foreigners Law and to suspend abridgements for foreign workers.

The law came into force on April 2015 and caused a riot of discontent since Employment Service is obliged to give priority to local labor.

The new rules limit the foreign employment in Montenegro.

Foreigners can be employed only if there are no any local workers satisfying the vacancy requirements.

Montenegrin restaurateurs reacted immediately, because there are no enough seasonal workers in Montenegro.

For many years Montenegro having big problems with rising unemployment, employs more than 23,000 foreigners during the tourist season, while the employment center has registered 35,000 Montenegrin unemployed citizens.

Montenegro is a leader of hiring seasonal workers in the region. 57,500 work permits to foreigners were issued in six countries of region during the past year, which nearly 31,000 were issued in Montenegro.

This is more than in Croatia in ten times, where 3,000 work permits for foreigners were issued last year.

In addition, the law determines the status other foreigners. Foreigners having property in Montenegro can stay in the country during the year. Previously, this period was limited to three months.
